About Family and Youth Peer Support in New Mexico

Child-Serving Systems can be complex and challenging to navigate. Family Peer Support Workers can provide guidance for caregivers to help through the navigation process.

The Family Peer Support (FPS) Program at the Center of Innovation trains qualified candidates (with lived experience parenting a child or youth with emotional, behavioral, and mental health challenges) to prepare them to assist caregivers in navigating child-serving systems through Family Peer Support Worker Certification (FPSW). Families receiving support benefit from a trained and certified FPSW. Education, support, and advocacy are integral components of Family Peer Support Programs, which are grounded in a system of care approach that places strong emphasis on family and youth voice and choice in service delivery and administration.

A lot changes as youth transition to adulthood and take on more independence. It is helpful to have some help along the way from someone who has been through something similar.

The Youth Peer Support (YPS) Program at the Center of Innovation trains qualified candidates (with lived experience navigating early life challenges as a youth) to prepare them to assist youth in navigating similar challenges through Youth Peer Support Specialist Certification. Youth receiving support benefit from a trained and certified YPSS. The promotion of belonging, hope, and shared power within the community is an integral component of Youth Peer Support Programs, which are grounded in a system of care approach that places strong emphasis on youth voice and choice in service delivery and administration.

Family Peer Support and Youth Peer Support Certification Training Programs at the Center of Innovation are funded by the Children Youth and Families Department. The Center of Innovation supports applicants throughout the certification process and provides ongoing coaching and support to those already certified. Specialized training and coaching for peer support supervisors is also available.
