The Art of EMDR Therapy with Children from Tots to Teens

- Audience: Behavioral health clinicians and licensed therapists who have completed EMDR Basic Training
EMDR Therapists will be trained in advanced skills in working with children from tots to teens. The training will detail how to implement all 8 phases with children from tots to teens. Additional specialty areas will include children in child welfare with special circumstances, symptoms, and diagnoses. Therapists will be able to explain EMDR therapy in a forensically complicated environment with ethical and legal considerations for treatment.

Trainer: Robbie Adler-Tapia, Ph.D., Tapia Counseling & Psychological Services, Inc.
Dr. Robbie Adler-Tapia is a licensed psychologist with an expansive background as a former firefighter, EMT, and nursing student. She specializes in EMDR therapy and child psychology, working with clients from infancy through adolescence. A recognized expert in trauma, she co-authored three editions of EMDR and the Art of Psychotherapy with Children and authored One Badge–One Brain–One Life, focused on brain health for emergency responders. Dr. Adler-Tapia has provided national and international trainings since 2005 and was personally trained by Dr. Francine Shapiro, founder of EMDR therapy. Her work has reached audiences in the U.S., Europe, Brazil, Kenya, Australia, and Latvia. Deeply committed to supporting emergency responders, she serves as an Employee Assistance Provider and previously held leadership roles with ERAP and other responder-focused initiatives. Dr. Adler-Tapia is also the founder and president of the nonprofit FiRSST and actively contributes to public safety mental health policy at the local and state levels.

Learning Objectives
Following this training, participants will be able to:
- Explain the AIP Model as applied to children.
- Explain the 8 phases of EMDR therapy with goals, objectives, and procedural steps.
- Develop child-oriented methods for target identification and organization to create a treatment an AIP informed treatment plan.
- Demonstrate child “languaging” for the 8 phases of EMDR therapy.
- Distinguish developmental concepts in a treatment plan.
- Describe the concept of “launching targets into the future.”
- Explain the stages of child development through the lens of the AIP Model.
- Describe the use of EMDR therapy in complex cases in specialty areas with diagnoses of ADHD, Giftedness, OCD, Attachment, Sexual Reactivity, and Dissociation.
- Identify at least four concepts of EMDR therapy with children and families in the child welfare system.
- Discover how to explain EMDR therapy in a forensically complicated environment.
