Training Description

Proper documentation promotes safety, minimizes error, improves the quality of the work by reducing repetition, helps with supervision, aids in protecting the organization, ensures regulatory and reimbursement compliance, and allows others to follow the family's story.

This 7-hour FREE virtual training introduces Certified Family Peer Support Workers to the importance of proper documentation and teaches general strategies on how to properly document for any agency. After attending this training, participants will be able to state why documentation is important, recognize the difference between opinion vs. observation, write a note using behavioral descriptions, and understand the purpose of required documentation for all types of Certified Peers.

This training is intended for Certified Family Peer Support Workers. Certified Youth Peer Support Specialists and Certified Peer Support Workers are also welcome to attend.

Trainers:
Spence Spencer, MPA, CWF, CFPSW Center of Innovation for Behavioral Health and Wellbeing

Trainer Bio:
Spence Spencer (they/them) has a master's degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Disability Health from the University of New Mexico. Spence has over 18 years of experience working in social services advocating for people with disabilities, children, and families. Their prior experience includes Youth Mental Health, classroom and special education support, High-Fidelity Wraparound, Adult Mental Health, and support for adults on the DD waiver. Spence began their career working in group home settings, then transitioned into working in training implementation. Spence then worked as a program director where they ensured engaging individualized therapeutic living environments. More recently, Spence worked as a Wraparound Facilitator where they worked directly with families providing support and navigation for families to access various resources that they might need. Currently, Spence is the Family and Youth Peer Program Manager at the Center of Innovation for Behavioral Health and Wellbeing. In this role, Spence oversees all program efforts for Family Peer Support, Youth Peer Support, Family Engagement, and Youth Engagement. Furthermore, Spence also trains supervisors and prospective Family and Youth Peer Support Workers, develops and implements trainings to advance Family and Youth Peer Support Workers and family and youth centered organizations across the state of New Mexico in efforts to expand Family and Youth Peer Supports. Additionally, Spence is a Certified Family Peer Support Worker.

  • Understanding the Peer Role: Defining the scope of family peer support, including ethical, boundary, and confidentiality guidelines.
  • System Navigation & Advocacy: Developing skills to help families navigate complex child-serving systems (mental health, juvenile justice, education) and advocate effectively for their needs.
  • Empowerment and Support: Utilizing lived experience to foster family resilience, enhance self-advocacy, and reduce isolation.
  • Core Competencies: Training in active listening, strengths-based coaching, crisis management
  • Organizational Integration: Supporting the integration of family peers into agencies, ensuring they are treated as professional partners, and fostering cultural humility.
