Ethics Across the System of Care for Youth and Family Peers

Training Description

Virtual | Free to Attend | 7-hour Training | 6.5 CEUs

Family and Youth Peers have a long-standing partnership with our communities as advocates for youth, parents, and the family unit while supporting them to navigate complex systems. This free 7-hour virtual training will help guide Family and Youth Peers to navigate ethical concerns in their work. Certified Wraparound Facilitators and others may benefit from attending this training to learn alongside their peer support colleagues and earn continuing education credits toward their credential.

This training and its companion eLearning course will cover HIPAA, explain what is considered protected health information, and help the attendees connect the fundamental principles of ethics to HIPAA.

This training is intended for Certified Family Peer Support Workers and Certified Youth Peer Support Specialists. Certified Wraparound Facilitators, Certified Peer Support Workers and others who work alongside peer support are also welcome.

NOTE: Above 6.5 CEUs are approved for Ethics Credits for Certified and Credentialed Professionals by NMCBBHP.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this training, participants will:

Live Training

  • Define Ethics.
  • Explain the importance of ethics in their work in behavioral health.
  • Detail the differences between ethics, values, morals and the law.
  • Identify what Ethics and Core Values have in common.

HIPAA and Ethics eLearning Course

  • Recognize the connection between The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and Ethics.
  • Identify special considerations for the release of information and technology.
  • Understand how HIPAA applies to Documentation and other best practices.

Requirements to Attend Training

The 6.5 CEUs are comprised of 5.5 CEU hours for completing the live virtual training and 1.0 CEU hour for completing the eLearning course. Both components of the training must be completed to receive the 6.5 Social Work CEUs - partial credit is not permitted.

Trainer: Spence Spencer, MPA, CWF, CFPSW | Center of Innovation for Behavioral Health and Wellbeing

Spence Spencer (they/them) has a master's degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Disability Health from the University of New Mexico. Spence has over 18 years of experience working in social services advocating for people with disabilities, children, and families. Their prior experience includes Youth Mental Health, classroom and special education support, High-Fidelity Wraparound, Adult Mental Health, and support for adults on the DD waiver. Spence began their career working in group home settings, then transitioned into working in training implementation. Spence then worked as a program director where they ensured engaging individualized therapeutic living environments. More recently, Spence worked as a Wraparound Facilitator where they worked directly with families providing support and navigation for families to access various resources that they might need. Currently, Spence is the Family and Youth Peer Program Manager at the Center of Innovation for Behavioral Health and Wellbeing. In this role, Spence oversees all program efforts for Family Peer Support, Youth Peer Support, Family Engagement, and Youth Engagement. Furthermore, Spence also trains supervisors and prospective Family and Youth Peer Support Workers, develops and implements trainings to advance Family and Youth Peer Support Workers and family and youth centered organizations across the state of New Mexico in efforts to expand Family and Youth Peer Supports. Additionally, Spence is a Certified Family Peer Support Worker.
