About the Wraparound Facilitator Certification Process

Facilitator in Training (FIT) Track

The Wraparound Facilitator is responsible for providing intensive care coordination with youth and their families using the New Mexico High-Fidelity Wraparound model. To be certified as a Wraparound Facilitator, you must be enrolled in the Facilitator in Training (FIT) Track. A detailed process flowchart of the FIT Enrollment Certification process is available below.

Who is This Training For?

Wraparound Facilitators employed at approved New Mexico High-Fidelity Wraparound Provider agencies should enroll in the FIT track and attend all required trainings for certification. Other provider agency staff as well as community stakeholders and state agency partners may attend select trainings to enhance their knowledge of High-Fidelity Wraparound in New Mexico.

FIT Enrollment & Certification Process

Complete the FIT Enrollment Form

Before beginning the FIT Training Track, an authorized agency representative must complete the Enrollment Form. This cannot be completed by the newly hired FIT. Once submitted and approved, an email will be sent detailing next steps. These next steps include completing online eLearning modules prior to attending first training. This is an absolute requirement.  Without the enrollment, the training registration portion will not work.

Foundations of High-Fidelity Wraparound Practice
Training Description:

In this 30-hour training spanning over four days, the Foundations of Wraparound Practice will explore the value-based philosophy that differentiates High-Fidelity Wraparound from other practices. Participants will learn how the 11 Core Values of NM High-Fidelity Wraparound are implemented in practice and recognize how these values are woven throughout the entire Wraparound process. The High-Fidelity Wraparound core elements and how these elements are the key underpinnings of Wraparound Practice are discussed in detail. Youth and Family trainers are a key part of this training and participants will have an opportunity to practice with the youth and family trainers in skill development activities and receive feedback. Wraparound Facilitators will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to begin working with youth and families.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the 11 Core Values of NM High-Fidelity Wraparound that distinguish Wraparound from other intervention approaches and internalize how these values are woven throughout the entire Wraparound process.
  • Identify how complex trauma impacts cognition and behavior.
  • Recognize the Wraparound Core Elements as key underpinnings of Wraparound Practice.
  • Describe each Core Element and detail how it is implemented in the Wraparound process.
  • Identify the four phases of the Wraparound process, explain the characteristics of each phase and describe the facilitator's role throughout each phase.
  • Become familiar with the forms needed for the successful facilitation of a team meeting.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in applying the core elements of High-Fidelity Wraparound to practice scenarios that address the unique needs and strengths of youth and families.

High-Fidelity Wraparound Follow-Up I: Documentation, Safety and Stability Training

Training Description:

In this 7-hour training, participants will learn how to use the High-Fidelity Wraparound model to create a strength-based Crisis and Stability plan that is built around the cycle of Predict, Prevent, and Protect. Participants will also learn how to integrate this into the Action plan and tie safety and stability issues to underlying needs. The documentation training will review all of the tools used in the New Mexico High-Fidelity Wraparound process and instruct on the processes, protocols and documentation expectations that guide the NM High-Fidelity Wraparound process.

Documentation

  • Explore the processes, protocols and expectations that guide the NM High-Fidelity Wraparound Process.
  • Understand documentation requirements of NM High-Fidelity Wraparound.

Safety and Stability

  • Understand the purpose and intention of a Safety and Stability plan.
  • Consider how a safety plan is tied to the values and essential elements of Wraparound.
  • Identify what constitutes a crisis.
  • Recognize when a safety and stability plan should be created.
  • Identify how to elicit a meaningful plan from a family and their supports, using the elements of “predict, prevent, and protect.”
  • Develop skills for documenting and utilizing a safety plan.
  • Recognize what to do if a crisis occurs.
  • Acquire knowledge of how to de-escalate.

High-Fidelity Wraparound Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths-CANS

Training Description:

In this 5-hour 30-minute virtual interactive session, trainers will use mock vignettes and small group activities to prepare users for certification and use of the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) assessment. CANS is a collaboratively completed measure of youth strengths and needs. This evidence-based, standardized assessment was developed to support decision-making, including level of care and intervention planning, to facilitate quality improvement initiatives, and to allow for the monitoring of clinical and functional outcomes. As a communication tool, it facilitates the linkage between the assessment process and the design of individualized service plans. This training provides an overview of the CANS overall framework, key concepts and how its multilevel approach directly benefits children and families. The principles and best practices in using the CANS as an assessment strategy, a communication framework, and tools to monitor outcomes and inform care plans will also be addressed.

This training is a part of the Facilitator-in-Training track required prior to certification as a Wraparound Facilitator. Those not on the FIT track may also take this training, on a space available basis and upon CYFD approval, for general knowledge or CEU credit. Select trainings can also be taken for continuing education credits required for Certified Wraparound Facilitator recertification.

  • Describe how CANS and Wraparound fit in a System of Care.
  • Explain what CANS is.
  • Identify why CANS is included in the Wraparound process.
  • Describe how HF Wraparound and CANS are similar and how they are different.
  • Demonstrate how to include the CANS in the Wraparound process.
  • List the CANS domains and items in preparation for certification.
  • Become certified to administer the CANS.

High-Fidelity Wraparound Follow-Up II: Engagement, Teaming and Conflict Resolution

Training Description:

In this 7-hour training, the Wraparound Facilitator will learn key skills to enhance the practice of engagement, drawing strongly on models such as the Nurtured Heart Approach and Motivational Interviewing. Facilitators will learn to identify the signs of strong or weak engagement, and creative strategies for when engagement is faltering. Participants will also learn about teaming and the process of moving from teams that rely on formal supports to teams that are primarily composed of natural and informal supports. Participants will explore how to manage conflict in the context of the High-Fidelity Wraparound approach and how to use conflict creatively to build an effective Action Plan.

Engagement

  • Understand the critical importance of engagement in the Wraparound process.
  • Identify the signs of engagement and the signs of disengagement.
  • Recognize barriers to engagement.
  • Learn the critical elements that enhance the process of engagement.
  • Enhance their engagement skills through the use of Motivational Interviewing concepts and techniques.
  • Identify the impact of personal biases on engagement.

Teaming

  • Identify why Wraparound uses teams and how they are critical to the practice of Wraparound.
  • Identify different the types of supports on a Wraparound team: natural, informal, formal, and community resources.
  • Recognize who should, and should not, be on a team.
  • Differentiate between the types of team members – natural, informal and formal supports.
  • Recognize how the teaming process supports the family in achieving their vision.
  • Understand Best Practice Teaming Benchmarks and how to reach them.

Conflict Resolution

  • Define conflict in the context of a Wraparound Team.
  • Perceive conflict in a positive and strengths-based way.
  • Recognize different styles of conflict resolution and identify their own approach to managing conflict.
  • Understand the “collaborative” approach to conflict management and why Wraparound seeks to take this approach.
  • Learn how the Wraparound Process and Motivational Interviewing techniques can be used to manage conflict.
  • Develop and practice tools that support a collaborative approach to conflict management/resolution.

High-Fidelity Wraparound Follow-Up III: Deepening Our Understanding of Vision, Needs and Benchmarks

Training Description:

In this 7-hour training, coaches teach participants skills to discover Vision and Needs, to differentiate them from other items, and to effectively apply them in an Action Plan. The High-Fidelity Wraparound elements of Vision and Needs are often grasped well when explained, but can be challenging to meaningfully incorporate when working with families. Goals are often mistaken for Vision and Services are often mistaken for Needs. Building on these skills, the training will explore how to utilize Benchmarks to gauge the effectiveness of an Action Plan and honor the outcome-based value of High-Fidelity Wraparound.

Vision

  • Identify why a Vision Statement is important in Wraparound.
  • Differentiate between a goal and a vision.
  • Construct a positive and inspiring Vision Statement that reflects the whole family’s hopes and dreams and provides the team with a sense of purpose.

Needs

  • Understand what is meant by “needs driven.”
  • Identify three kinds of needs.
  • Define underlying needs in the context of Wraparound.
  • Distinguish between unmet needs, problems, and goals.
  • Understand unmet needs are the basis for disruptive behavior.

Benchmarks

  • Understand the purpose of benchmarks in the context of Wraparound.
  • Identify the principles to establish benchmarks.
  • Utilize the key elements of a benchmark (DOMA) to develop appropriate benchmarks.

High-Fidelity Wraparound Follow-Up IV: Ethics Across the System of Care

Training Description:

Ethics for Certified and Credentialed Professionals explores the role of ethics in the work of Wraparound and Peer Support providers.  Participants will learn to differentiate between the concepts of ethics, values, morals and laws and will examine how these principles are implemented in practice.  This training will examine how ethics are connected to Wraparound and Peer Support core values and participants will have the opportunity to consider appropriate responses to ethical dilemmas relevant to Wraparound and Peer support.   The connection between ethics and trauma-informed care will be discussed.

This training includes the asynchronous eLearning, HIPAA and Ethics which explores the connection between the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and ethics.  The course will provide an overview of HIPAA to include who it applies to and what specific health information is protected.  Fundamental Principals of ethics are reviewed and connected to the requirements of the act.  Learners will come to understand that following HIPAA contributes to ethical practice in the behavioral health care setting.   The course will discuss the Release of Information, including NM law and best practice. Special considerations for  technology and social media are identified. Best practice with regard to confidentiality and documentation are explored.

High-Fidelity Wraparound Fidelity & Outcomes Measurement Evaluation Training for Facilitators

Training Description:

This 3-hour 30-minute training is designed to orient Wraparound Facilitators on the domains Wraparound tools measure and how to utilize the results to improve practice. NM High-Fidelity Wraparound use the following instruments to evaluate fidelity and outcome measures: The WFI EZ, the TOM, and the DART. These tools were developed with the High-Fidelity Wraparound Evidence Research Team (WERT) from the University of Washington.

Complete Required Fidelity Monitoring and Competency Assessments

Wraparound Coach will guide FIT through this process and ensure all assessments are completed.

Submit Application for Certification

Once all requirements have been met, submit online form and upload all required documentation. Application will be reviewed for completion and a letter of approval from CYFD to sit for the exam will be issued.

Take the Certified Wraparound Facilitator (CWF) Exam

Once approved to sit for the exam, you will receive an email detailing how to set up your account with the New Mexico Credentialing Board for Behavioral Health Professionals (NMCBBHP) and register to take the Certified Wraparound Facilitator Exam. See more information below about NMCBBHP.
